CHAPTER 55

PAISLEY, OREGON

You, me, Laney, Drake, and a few others: our participation is required, and there’s no changing that. Max’s eyes seemed to watch Molly from the same dark corner of her mind where the voice had appeared.

Taking a trembling breath and pointedly shutting down that memory, she returned her focus to Sophia. The woman had been mentioned a lot in the Gnostic texts, and never in the Judeo Christian Bible as far as Molly could recall. And although she’d seen mentions of Sophia, or Zoe as she was sometimes known, Molly had skipped over most of those sections, her focus being on Eve. But being her search for info on Eve wasn’t leading to any great insights, she decided to shift gears. Pulling over a few books, she flipped through them until she found one with mentions of the female archon.

Taking the book into her lap, she took a sip of her now-cold coffee as she read. In this telling, Sophia had been one of the archon’s children. She was the one who had created Ialdabaoth, whom they now knew was Gedeon.

Molly shook her head. What arrogance to think that you could create life.

But apparently it hadn’t gone the way Sophia had hoped, and she’d turned her back on her creation, flinging it down to the world below. The creation, in turn, had created its own companions: the Fallen.

Curling her lip, Molly shook her head at the depiction. Was there a kernel of truth in it? Had Sophia unleashed the horror of Gedeon on all of them and then simply washed her hands of the damage?

Although the story was compelling, she knew it was only one interpretation of Sophia’s story. Yet there was a tingling in the back of her mind that urged her on. She had a feeling she was on the right track. For an hour, she sat there going through story after story of Sophia, engrossed in the competing interpretations.

Each story varied slightly, but amongst most of them there was one agreement: Sophia had created Gedeon. And Gedeon, in turn, had created all of the Fallen.

There was one story that disagreed with that view. In that telling, she hadn’t created Gedeon, but instead had been used by him to create the Fallen. It was a brutal and violent image, painting Sophia as more of a victim than a perpetrator.

But the large bulk of them portrayed her as the one who had sinned. The one who had caused the evil that now plagued all of them to be a part of this world, an echo of the Garden of Eden story.

Molly grunted. Of course, there was no mention of any punishment for that.

And then she went still. Although Molly hadn’t been part of the initial conversation with Eve, Danny, unbeknownst to any of the principal members of the discussion, had recorded it.

Molly had listened to that recording, along with Danny, Lou, and Rolly. She’d felt guilty at the time, but they all knew that they needed to know what was happening.
